Hello!!!
I'm Ani, the sole owner and operator of Mani Farms Candles!!
Welcome to my first blog! How exciting! Over the last year that I've been making candles and selling them to close family and friends, I've been asked some really good questions about candles. Not only the ones I make, but ones that are purchased at stores! So, I decided that maybe I should talk a bit about the most common "issues" that candles have! So here you go!
The best thing about small batch, hand poured candles is that each and every single candle is different. No two are alike. Whether it be little crystallizations, or slight difference is colour or decor - each one in totally unique and some, imperfectly perfect.
I just wanna talk about what some of these perfect little imperfections can be, so that people can understand a little bit more of what candles are all about! These imperfections are simply cosmetic and in no way, shape or form affect the functionality of the candle.
Crystallizations or frosting, are the white spots you sometimes see on the outside of a candle! Our Blue Marble candles was actually made purposely to have crystals because I think it looks cool! It’s pretty inevitable with soy candles, and happens when natural soy mixes with an oil (we use phthalate free fragrance oils) and gets heated up or cooled down. It’s also much more noticeable with coloured candles. Soy wax continues to harden and crystallize throughout its life, so I just like to look at it as a candles “beauty mark”.
Candle sweating is what happens when moving a candle from one temperature to another. Soy wax is pretty sensitive to extreme temperature changes. It causes the natural oils to separate from the wax, leaving little droplets of oil on the top of the candle. You probably notice this more in the summertime, but it can happen any time of the year. It doesn’t affect the candle in any way, and you can just use a tissue to wipe it up before lighting your candle.
Rough, pitted tops after burning happens when the melted wax of the candle cools down and hardens at an inconsistent rate. This is actually a feature of natural soy waxes. Don’t worry about this natural beauty, the candle will still burn as expected.
So, as you can see, most if not all of these things are purely cosmetic and are really caused by the naturalness of the soy wax. They don’t affect the way the candle smells or burns and there are ways that you can ensure the best life out of your candle!
